Limelight never seems to fade on Amitabh Bachchan. The lanky cine star now occupies the center-stage as a presidential candidate. Predictably, it has raised questions about his suitability as the country’s Rashtrapati.

SPARKS FROM DIFFERENT parts of the country are pouring in with one sizzler of a news stating that Amitabh Bachchan, the sparkling diamond of the Indian Cinema, is likely to contest in the presidential elections this year.

President Abdul Kalam will vacate his office in July. Several political parties like the Samajwadi Party, TDP and AIADMK have declared that they will support Bachchan. If elected, Bachchan will become the 12th President of the country. This is creating a ruckus on the political and social front.

All the former presidents have been senior statesmen of high repute from the fields of politics, education or science and technology. There is still no precedent of a president coming from the film industry. This issue has raised many eyebrows and left several political aficionados gaping. Thus the current AB-presidential issue has brought with it a unique scenario, which is likely to touch both the common man and the political front with unprecedented velocity. In our country the eligibility criteria for becoming president is that one needs to be above 35 years of age ,an Indian National and must have a special achievement in his/her respective field.

The emotions of the common man are likely to hit frenzy. Amitabh Bachchan is a dynamic person who is almost worshipped by thousands of fans in our country. He is the God of film land. At the same time, is it a wise decision on our part to make the megastar the head of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force?

Based on the word catching rapid fire in all circuits, a trial of thoughts and contradictions is haunting every mind. India is the second-largest democracy of the world and to elect its president is no child’s play. The glaring facts reflected in this decision are directed towards intricate issues spun in national complexities. Is India ready to give its realm in the hands of someone who has lived his entire life for himself?

Imagine the Republic Day Parade and Bachchan all geared to make a fiery speech? Can we really bestow the kind of trust a nation demands in his hands? Being the heartthrob of millions of people, we cannot legitimize that he has the potential to mince through politics with the help of Amar Singh and claim the Rashtrapati Bhavan. But is it fair to discriminate Bachchan and prevent him from contributing to active politics just because he is a significant figure in Bollywood? Or, should we bar him on the pretext that he has been gifted a Rolls Royce along with son Abhishekh bagging a Bentley as well as to-be-bahu Ashwarya? Should we consider him as an icon with the potential to revolutionize the country or must we still question his character back flashing the Amitabh-Rekha-Parveen Babi love saga? It is the voice of the commonman? Do we need a person who has the neatest record to become president?
