You may soon be able to talk on your mobile phone -- while on 'roaming' -- without worrying about huge bills.
This seems a distinct possibility with the Minister for Communication and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran backing a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India recommendation to reduce roaming charges.

Currently, the fixed monthly roaming rate is Rs 50 and on top of that GSM operators charge Rs 2.89 to 3.99 per minute. CDMA operators charge between Re 1 to Rs 3.99. Charges for an incoming call while on roaming range from Rs 3.09 to Rs 3.99 per minute. SMSes are charged at Rs 3.50 each.

TRAI has mooted that the monthly rental for roaming should be waived and the SMS charge to be slashed.

Predictably, the Cellular Operators Association of India and the Association of Unified Service Providers of India (AUSPI) have opposed this move.
